SUMMARY:In The Moment
DESCRIPTION:A weathered barn. A walk through the woods. A landscape seen from a trail. A piece that brings back the smell of a farmhouse\, warm milk and peppermint. \nWe all live in the moment\, but the significance of each moment is easy to miss. For artists Kate Bridger\, Lynn Hood and Jo C. Willems\, it is what they notice when they pause and look up that finds its way into their work. \nFor Kate Bridger\, a piece can become a way of stepping back into a moment. Table For One returns her to a cosy hostel café in Amsterdam\, snow falling outside as she enjoys a bowl of hearty soup and a glass of wine. Her work preserves these places and experiences\, while leaving room for viewers to find their own stories within them. \nJo C. Willems places the viewer just outside the picture frame with an invitation to step into the piece. Her Perspective of Motion uses curved perspective to pull the viewer in\, allowing them to move from one side to the other and remain in the work. \nFor Lynn Hood\, wandering the shoreline\, investigating tidal pools and bringing those observations back to the easel creates a different kind of moment. Daily life recedes\, negative thoughts quiet\, and her attention settles on what is taking shape in front of her. She finds freedom and comfort in the meditative process of creating her mandalas. \nIn The Moment invites us to pause\, look up and take notice. \nJoin us for the Opening Reception\nSaturday\, October 17\, 1–3 pm\nPearl Ellis Gallery\n1729 Comox Ave\, Comox \nThe exhibition runs October 13 to November 7. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:The Moon Also Rises
DESCRIPTION:The invitation is to look up. \nIn The Moon Also Rises\, seven island artists turn their attention toward our nearest celestial neighbour. Each artist offers a different way of seeing\, experiencing and responding to the Moon. Across a multitude of media\, including painting\, printmaking\, photography\, sculpture\, video and poetry\, the exhibition shifts back and forth between the tangible and imaginal\, the known and mysterious. \nWhile the moon has provided us a consistent presence in the sky\, it has also offered a powerful vessel for humans to make meaning of. Consistently inconstant\, it marks time and generates tides. The moon illuminates dark nights\, shines during the day and has long been associated with dreams\, desire and psychological transformation. Simultaneously intimate and immense\, the moon acts as a repository for the symbolic\, whether playful or contemplative\, and has always captured the imagination of humanity. \nOne moon. Seven artists. Seven perspectives. \nWhat does the moon awaken in you?

SUMMARY:Comox Valley Songwriters Circle
DESCRIPTION:Each month singer/songwriters gather to share their tunes at Artful : The Gallery. Most musicians bring along their\nguitars or ukuleles\, although some sing a cappella or use the in-house piano for accompaniment. \nHost Ashley Sykes’s love of connecting with other artists provides motivation to write\nand perform in the supportive group. The circle does not provide instruction; it provides an opportunity to perform your song\, and to be impacted by others doing the same. \nAttendance is by donation ($10 or pwyc). The group welcomes newcomers\, and the\nonly criteria is that the songs performed are original.

SUMMARY:Kathy Nash ~ A Life in Colour Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Kathy Nash is a visual artist working with collage\, mixed media painting\, and artist books. In art\, as in life\, she seeks a return to more soulful\, caring values and strives to represent them in her work. Re-ocurring themes are women and the sacred\, plant life in all its forms\, nostalgia for the past\, and a fascination with other cultures\, suggesting narratives of other times and places. \nAlthough Nash makes use of technological innovations\, she maintains a handmade accessible feel throughout her artwork. Familiar objects\, materials\, and images act as entry points into her work. Reinforcing her environmental and recycling ethics\, she makes extensive use of up-cycled found objects\, clippings\, product wrappers\, vintage ephemera\, and even frames. \nCreating books by hand is a low-tech meditative art which allows Nash to slow down and enjoy the qualities of the materials she utilizes\, including indigenous plant papers from around the world. Nash has always been a voracious reader\, and a new world opened up for her when she discovered artist books. She loves the challenge of matching a sculptural book structure to the words and images she is presenting. \nKathy Nash’s exhibition “A Life in Colour” is perfectly timed with affordable small works and handcrafted journals for holiday gift-giving. To view the show with the artist in attendance call Kathy at 250-898-8618 to make an appointment.

SUMMARY:Just in Time Choirs Fall 2026 part 1 Made in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Just in Time Choirs are celebrating Canada’s rich musical history with their Fall 2026 concert “Made in Canada: Part 1”. \nOn November 27 (7pm) & November 28th (2pm)\, join the Just in Time Choirs at the Sid Williams Theatre for an homage to Canadian artists and songs\, from folk to pop and everything in between\, as they present “Made in Canada: Part 1”. Featuring beloved favourites from household names and fresh new sounds from up and coming artists\, the choirs’ rendition of these special songs will fill their audiences with pride.   \nThe Just in Time Choirs consist of three ensembles: Unplugged (everyone welcome)\, and the smaller auditioned groups\, the Jems (treble) and Vocal Minority (mixed). They will be joined by skilled collaborators: Sean Mooney on piano\, Beau Stocker on drums\, Steve Wallace on bass\, Filipe Andrade on various instruments\, and a special guest\, indigenous musician\, Kirsten Wood. \nThese renowned contemporary choirs are known for their versatility; their repertoire covers a wide spectrum of contemporary musical styles. At this show\, you’ll hear songs like the Tragically Hip’s enduring masterpiece\, “Ahead by a Century”\, the rousing “Good Old Hockey Game” by Stompin’ Tom Connors\, a Shania Twain mash-up\, and folk classics like “The Log Driver’s Waltz” and “We Rise Again” by the Rankin Family. Fabulous arrangements of gentle classics like Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” play alongside new works by Sarah Mclachlan and William Prince. A choir highlight is “yôtin”\, a mesmerizing ode to the wind by Cree choral composer\, Sherryl Sewepagaham. The concert finale brings all three choirs together to sing the anthemic “Rise Up!” by the Parachute Club. \nJust in Time’s founder and choral conductor\, Wendy Nixon Stothert is excited to celebrate Canadian music and the artists that create it! “Canadian musicians have a created an impressive body of work and it was so hard to choose which songs to include that we’ll be doing Made in Canada Part 2 in the Spring!” she exclaims. “I am thrilled to be able to present a wide variety of songs with the choirs that showcase the creative story-telling and expert artistry of Canadian singers from the past 50+ years.” \nThe delight is infectious and the presentation by each of the three choirs is uplifting and entertaining. \nTickets are $33.40 for adults\, $15 for children 12 & under\, plus fees. There is also a live stream option for $33.40 per household\, and we are again offering a limited number of Community Supported Tickets at $15 for those under financial constraint. Tickets available in person\, by phone\, and online at sidwilliamstheatre.com. Patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early as performances regularly sell out. \nThe choir family invites you to join them for “Made in Canada: Part 1” and to be a part of the ongoing joy that is Just in Time Choirs and communicating through song.

SUMMARY:Kathy Nash ~ A Life in Colour ~ Artist Reception

SUMMARY:Lecture: Wild Bears of Canada
DESCRIPTION:In a presentation based on his book\, Wild Bears of Canada\, wildlife guide and photographer Edward Savage will share some of his observations about grizzlies\, black bears\, and polar bears. \nSavage will be speaking at 7:00 PM on Tuesday\, December 1\, in the Courtenay and District Museum. \nEdward Savage has spent fifteen years watching bears across some of the country’s most remote terrain— and for many of the bears in this book\, that relationship spans over a decade. That depth of observation is evident on every page of his book: how grizzly mothers raise and wean their young\, what dangers imperil black bears\, and how polar bears locate each other across the sea ice. \nSavage’s photographs and reflections explore the many traits of bears that we as humans value and connect with\, from the profound mother-cub bonds to the strength and calm they exude in daily life. \nCopies of Wild Bears of Canada (Harbour Publishing) will be available for purchase ($49.95 plus tax) and signing after the talk. \nEdward Savage has led nature-based expeditions across Canada and internationally—wading rivers\, kayaking remote coastlines\, crossing the sub-arctic tundra—and has lectured widely on bear behaviour and ecology. \nAdmission to the lecture is $5 per historical society member; $6 for non-members. Advance tickets are strongly recommended. Doors open 6:30 PM. \nFor more information\, or to purchase tickets over the phone\, call 250-334-0686 ext. 2.  The Courtenay and District Museum is located at 207 Fourth Street in downtown Courtenay.
