SUMMARY:Friday I'm in Love! A Tribute to The Cure & other New Wave/Goth Favs
DESCRIPTION:12 Vancouver Island original musical acts each playing 12 minute sets of their interpretations of songs by The Cure and other New Wave/Goth/Dark wave/post-punk icons from that amazing 80s musical era. \nIncluding: Amy Muloin & the Alley Flowers\, Avro\, Bath Slut\, Night Mirrors\, Pink Plagues\, Pranatricks\, Rudeboy\, Short Circuit\, Soft Top\, Sonder\, Trip Sitters\, & Valley Edge Choir. \nPlus drag performances by Kara Nedge and Rat King! \nCVGBs returns with their third fundraiser tribute show. After sold out events honouring and re-imagining the music of first Nirvana in 2023\, then David Bowie in 2024\, this coming Friday the 13th of February takes a bit of a detour with the music of the Cure\, mixed with the anthems of other New Wave/Goth/Dark wave/post-punk icons from that amazing 80s musical era. The concept is the same: A dozen radically different Vancouver Island original acts will do twelve-minute sets with the intent to play songs they love\, but not necessarily as you might expect them to sound. These are not straight cover versions! The musical acts are all donating 100% of their performance funds towards Foundry Comox Valley\, a safe space where youth can get free\, confidential help and support\, without judgement. https://foundrybc.ca/centre/comox-valley/

SUMMARY:Just in Time Choirs Fall 2025 20th Anniversary – Singers’ Choice
DESCRIPTION:The Just in Time Choirs are marking an exciting milestone\, their 20th Anniversary Year of connecting through song! \nTo mark the momentous occasion of their 20th Anniversary\, the Just in Time Choirs’ first concert of the 25/26 season is their “20th Anniversary Celebration Part 1: Singers’ Choice”. All concert selections were voted in by choir members from among hundreds of songs that have been performed over the past two decades. Two Fall Concerts will be performed at the Sid Williams Theatre: Saturday November 29th at 7:00 and a matinee\, Sunday November 30th at 2:00. \nIn the spring\, they’ll be hosting their second concert\, “Part 2: Director’s Choice” with favourite songs chosen by choir director\, Wendy Nixon Stothert. Come be a part of a year-long celebration of 20 years of music and community. \nThe Just in Time Choirs consist of three ensembles: Unplugged (everyone welcome)\, and the smaller auditioned groups\, the Jems (treble) and Vocal Minority (mixed). They will be joined by skilled musical collaborators: Sean Mooney on piano\, Beau Stocker on drums\, Steve Wallace on bass\, and Jeff Drummond on guitar. \nThese renowned contemporary choirs are known for their versatility; their performances cover a wide spectrum of musical styles from jazz\, ballads\, folk\, swing\, soul\, and contemporary pop to classic rock. You’ll hear Queen’s enduring masterpiece\, “Bohemian Rhapsody”\, the foot stomping “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers\, “Chain of Fools” by the immortal Aretha Franklin\, Stevie Nicks’ haunting “Landslide”\, the Boss and the E-Street Band’s timeless “Dancing in the Dark” plus more from The Eagles\, Michael Buble\, Gladys Knight\, Eurythmics\, and many more! \nThe concert finale brings all three choirs together to sing Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and finally\, another Queen classic\, “Somebody to Love”. \nJust in Time’s founder and choral conductor\, Wendy Nixon Stothert is excited to celebrate! “The singers have chosen an excellent setlist for this first part of our 20th Anniversary highlights\,” says Nixon Stothert. “Back in 2005\, I never could’ve imagined the robust\, committed\, and wonderfully friendly community that the choirs have become. The choirs’ Council has been instrumental in creating highly efficient administration and so many fun opportunities for the singers. I’m so proud of the musicianship we’ve achieved and the connections we’ve made.” \nThe delight is infectious and the presentation by each of the three choirs is uplifting and entertaining. The audience is often tapping their feet and singing along – and maybe even doing a little seat dancing! \nTickets are $30 for adults\, $15 for children 12 & under\, plus fees. There is also a live stream option for $30 per household\, and we are again offering a limited number of Community Supported Tickets at $15 for those under financial constraint. Tickets available in person\, by phone\, and online at sidwilliamstheatre.com. The first single Blowing Kisses was featured prominently in season three of the hit show The Bear. The band is composed of Stephen McBean\, Jeremy Schmidt\, Adam Bulgasem\, Amber Webber\, and Arjan Miranda. SUMMARY:Just in Time Choirs Spring 2025 Concert "New Orleans"
DESCRIPTION:Just in Time Choirs present “New Orleans”\, their Spring Concert at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay at 7:00 pm on Saturday April 26th.   \nJoin us in celebrating the fabulous\, diverse music of this vibrant and iconic city\, the city that gave us Louis Armstrong\, Harry Connick Jr.\, Jon Batiste and John Boutte to name just a few. The songs are legendary. The choirs will be covering much loved tunes like “Iko Iko” by Dr John\, Hank Williams’ “Jambalaya”\, the trifecta of “Sweet”\, “Freedom”\, and “It’s All Right” by Jon Batiste\, the cherished “Mr Bojangles” by Jerry Jeff Walker\, and a reprise of a choir favourite\, “Proud Mary”. And of course\, a New Orleans set list would not be complete without Harry Connick Jr’s “It Had to be You” and “What a Wonderful World” by the master\, Louis Armstrong. \n“The music borne of the vibrant multicultural hub of New Orleans has heavily influenced modern music genres such as jazz\, blues\, R’n’B\, and gospel\,” says Wendy Nixon Stothert\, Just in Time’s founder and choral conductor. “With 40 of us from Just in Time having travelled to NOLA during March Break\, we’ve gleaned a deeper understanding and appreciation of the musical legacy of New Orleans and we’re looking forward to sharing that with our audience.” \nNow in their 20th year\, the thriving Just in Time Choirs organization comprises three ensembles: Unplugged (everyone welcome)\, and the smaller auditioned groups\, the Jems and Vocal Minority. These renowned local contemporary choirs will be joined by talented musical collaborators: Sean Mooney on piano\, Britt Bowman on bass\, Beau Stocker on drums\, and special guest\, Rachel Cooper on clarinet and saxophone. The infectious joy that all three choirs project in their presentations is uplifting and entertaining and has the audience tapping their feet and singing along. \nTickets are $28.00 for adults\, $15.00 for children 12 & under (including fees). There is also a live stream option for $28.00 per household\, and we are again offering a limited number of Community Supported Tickets at $15 for those under financial constraint. Tickets and full details available online from the Sid Williams Theatre or the Just in Time web site. Tickets may be purchased at the door\, subject to availability\, but patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early as performances regularly sell out. \nSo\, if you “Feel like funkin’ it up” join us at the Sid. We look forward to sharing the joy of singing with you and welcoming you to the show!

SUMMARY:Bob Log III
DESCRIPTION:Bob Log III is a one man band slide guitar blues punk party. A perverse product of the Arizona desert\, Bob Log III has been diligently travelling the globe since 1996\, showcasing his incomparable talents and developing a devoted following along the way. A whirlwind of dexterous limbs and digits\, this super star sonic showman has to be seen to be believed. \nClad in his cannonball man\, extra tight jumpsuit and signature motorcycle helmet with telephone/microphone attached\, Bob Log III unfailingly sweats up a river while kicking on a kick drum\, stomping his homemade foot cymbal and playing slide on an old arch top guitar. Bob Log on being a one man band: “Yeah\, who needs a rhythm section? They say drummers are crazy\, guitar players are idiots and singers are assholes. And I gotta be all of ‘em.” His endless pursuit for musical mayhem and a downright party has seen his unique talents utilized for children’s birthday parties\, obscure beer barns\, mammoth music festivals and everything in between. \nBob Log explains: “It’s pretty simple: I take a guitar and turn it into a party. There’s a lot of ways to do that\, and I’ve figured out most of ‘em! Having fun with my guitar is the ultimate goal in every song. Then I add some drums to it. With my drumming it’s electronic beats\, but not a whole song programmed\, so it can change at any time. Then I also play real drums on top of that. I’m trying to sound like two drummers\, and one of my drummers is good and the one of my drummers is terrible and they absolutely hate each other! And I finger-pick on top of that and sing into a telephone in my helmet attached to my head. The basic idea is I’m doing this fun thing with my guitar and making it as fun as possible until people spill their drinks and someone loses a shoe. If there’s one shoe on the ground\, and it’s totally wet because of the puddles of spilled drinks\, then I‘ve done my job right.” \nYet\, beyond the crazy show and mesmerizing visuals\, lies the true reason for Bob Log’s international cult status and superhero adoration. It is quite simply the guitar playing – finger picked lightning\, sliding up and down\, stopping when it wants to\, then starting again when it feels like it\, all in a way that makes people move uncontrollably\, smile and reel. \nhttps://www.boblog111.com/ \nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Log_III \nhttps://www.facebook.com/boblog111/ \nhttps://boblogiii.bandcamp.com/track/consuela-did-it \nOpening the show will be Caveman & The Banshee\, a kozmik atomic punk duo from Nanaimo BC Canada guaranteed to melt your brain. \nhttps://cavemanandthebanshee.bandcamp.com/ \nhttps://www.instagram.com/cavemanandthebanshee/

SUMMARY:CVGBs New Year's Dance Party w/ Drama Queen\, Devours\, & Avro
DESCRIPTION:Local music and art cooperative CVGBs is proudly presenting it’s first ever New Year’s event\, an inclusive dance party featuring three diverse live acts & DJs. Co-headlining will be two acts that have caused multiple long line-ups to see them play at Cumberland’s Woodstove Festival: Vancouver’s Devours\, and Salt Spring Island’s Drama Queen. Opening the show will be a solo set from Denman Island’s Avro.\n\nDrama Queen\, is the lush\, nostalgic\, bejewelled synth-pop band that your pelvis never knew it needed. Reminiscent of Heroes-era Bowie and Kate Bush\, their music will confuse\, delight and alight your feelings and your senses. Give in to the emotional pop-star paradise soundtrack that is Drama Queen. Drama Queen is a synth-wave band\, and the latest invocation from Knick Tomlinson formerly of “Superfeather.” The group consists of Knick on Synthesizer\, Pierre Vincent Forgues on Synthesizers\, Harley Dunn on bass guitar and Ben Frey on Drums. Effortlessly channeling the essence of the past while crafting a sound distinctly their own\, Drama Queen weaves a tapestry of neon melodies and pulsating rhythms. They transcend the ordinary and envelope listeners in a vibrant sonic journey reminiscent of an electrifying ’80s dreamscape dancehall.https://www.instagram.com/drama.queen.band/\n\nDevours (they/them) is the DIY electropunk project of Vancouver-based musician Jeff Cancade. Across four acclaimed underground albums\, including the recent Polaris Prize-longlisted Homecoming Queen\, Devours has written confessional and confrontational electronic music about masculinity\, body image\, gay politics\, and inner-city queer existence. They have toured Canada and the US\, received coverage from Vice\, CBC\, Exclaim\, and the Globe and Mail\, and have performed at festivals such as SXSW\, Treefort Music Fest\, Up Here Festival\, Purple City\, Vancouver Jazz Fest\, and more. Their anticipated fifth record will be released in March 2025.https://www.facebook.com/devoursvancouverhttps://www.instagram.com/devours.ufo/https://linktr.ee/devourshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/1naaQv78Dwzc6iwCNRUWTb…\n\nDenman Island’s is an electronic pop group from Denman Island. SUMMARY:Just in Time Choirs Fall 2024 Concert "River"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Just in Time Choirs for their Fall Concert\, “River”\, at a new location: Northgate Church\, Burgess Road\, Courtenay on Saturday December 7th 2024.  Matinee – 3:00 pm\, evening performance – 7:30 pm. \nIn keeping with the “River” theme\, songs have been chosen for their reference to rivers\, but also because they reflect how our journey through life is like a river meandering\, sometimes rushing\, discovering what’s around the next bend. \nThese choirs are known for their versatility and their performances cover a wide spectrum of musical styles from jazz\, ballads\, folk\, swing\, soul\, and contemporary pop to classic rock.  You’ll hear “Take me to the River”\, classic rock by Al Green\, jazz standards like “Moon River”\, the folk classic\, “Shenandoah”\, Tina Turner’s iconic version of “Proud Mary” and contemporary pop like James Bay’s “Hold Back the River”\, just to name a few of the great river themed songs on the setlist. \nThe concert finale brings all three choirs together to perform a few pieces\, including Carly Simon’s anthemic “Let the River Run”. \nAll songs have been chosen by Just in Time’s founder and choral conductor\, Wendy Nixon Stothert.  “I love how the river can be a metaphor for so many life experiences like change and renewal\, comfort and solace\, and so much more\, for cultures all around the globe.” says Nixon Stothert. “Living on the Puntledge River\, I get to witness all the seasonal stages of the river and the role it plays in nurturing our environment. This setlist is like a love letter to the river\, an ode of appreciation.” \nApproaching their 20th year\, the Just in Time Choirs organization comprises three ensembles: Unplugged (everyone welcome)\, and the smaller auditioned groups\, the Jems (treble) and Vocal Minority (mixed). These renowned local contemporary choirs will be joined by talented musical collaborators: Sean Mooney on piano\, Britt Bowman on bass\, Beau Stocker on drums\, Arlo Fleenor on guitar. The infectious joy that all three choirs project in their presentations is uplifting and entertaining and has the audience tapping their feet and singing along. \nTickets are $25 for adults\, $15 for children 12 & under. There is also a live stream option for $25 per household\, and we are again offering a limited number of Community Supported Tickets at $15 for those under financial constraint. Tickets and full details available online at justintime.tickit.ca or the Just in Time web site www.justinetimechoirs.ca.  Tickets may be purchased at the door\, subject to availability\, but patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early as performances regularly sell out. \nThe choirs look forward to sharing the joy of singing with you and welcoming you to the show!

SUMMARY:David Braid - Composer. Improviser. Pianist.
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed Canadian composer\, improviser and jazz pianist David Braid is visiting Vancouver Island in December 2024 following his tour in Denmark\, Poland and the UK. It is our good fortune that he can join us in the Salon to perform selections from his own compositions for solo piano\, as heard on some of his Juno award-winning recordings. \n\nCombining harmonic intricacies fundamental to European classical music and the spontaneity of American jazz\, Braid’s original music engages audiences with melodic lyricism and rhythmic pulses that do not conform neatly to any one musical genre. For lovers of jazz and the piano\, and for folks who like to be adventurous in their musical taste\, do not miss this performance!
