SUMMARY:In The Moment
DESCRIPTION:A weathered barn. A walk through the woods. A landscape seen from a trail. A piece that brings back the smell of a farmhouse\, warm milk and peppermint. \nWe all live in the moment\, but the significance of each moment is easy to miss. For artists Kate Bridger\, Lynn Hood and Jo C. Willems\, it is what they notice when they pause and look up that finds its way into their work. \nFor Kate Bridger\, a piece can become a way of stepping back into a moment. Table For One returns her to a cosy hostel café in Amsterdam\, snow falling outside as she enjoys a bowl of hearty soup and a glass of wine. Her work preserves these places and experiences\, while leaving room for viewers to find their own stories within them. \nJo C. Willems places the viewer just outside the picture frame with an invitation to step into the piece. Her Perspective of Motion uses curved perspective to pull the viewer in\, allowing them to move from one side to the other and remain in the work. \nFor Lynn Hood\, wandering the shoreline\, investigating tidal pools and bringing those observations back to the easel creates a different kind of moment. Daily life recedes\, negative thoughts quiet\, and her attention settles on what is taking shape in front of her. She finds freedom and comfort in the meditative process of creating her mandalas. \nIn The Moment invites us to pause\, look up and take notice. \nJoin us for the Opening Reception\nSaturday\, October 17\, 1–3 pm\nPearl Ellis Gallery\n1729 Comox Ave\, Comox \nThe exhibition runs October 13 to November 7. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:The Moon Also Rises
DESCRIPTION:The invitation is to look up. \nIn The Moon Also Rises\, seven island artists turn their attention toward our nearest celestial neighbour. Each artist offers a different way of seeing\, experiencing and responding to the Moon. Across a multitude of media\, including painting\, printmaking\, photography\, sculpture\, video and poetry\, the exhibition shifts back and forth between the tangible and imaginal\, the known and mysterious. \nWhile the moon has provided us a consistent presence in the sky\, it has also offered a powerful vessel for humans to make meaning of. Consistently inconstant\, it marks time and generates tides. The moon illuminates dark nights\, shines during the day and has long been associated with dreams\, desire and psychological transformation. Simultaneously intimate and immense\, the moon acts as a repository for the symbolic\, whether playful or contemplative\, and has always captured the imagination of humanity. \nOne moon. Seven artists. Seven perspectives. \nWhat does the moon awaken in you?

SUMMARY:Button Blankets: Exhibit\, talk\, and button drive
DESCRIPTION:The Courtenay Museum will host an exhibit featuring button blankets created by artist Pamela Mitchell from October 22 to October 30\, 2026. \n  \nMitchell is a K’ómoks First Nation member and their Culture Manager who has Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish roots. \n  \nHer artwork can be seen around the valley including the NIC Courtenay campus\, on a Comox Fire Department truck\, and at her family-owned Cedar Bark Gallery on Bayside Road. \n  \nOn Saturday\, October 24\, Mitchell will present a brief illustrated talk in conjunction with the exhibit that will touch on the history of button blankets as well as common KFN crests. The same talk will be given twice on Saturday\, October 24\, first at 1 pm and again at 1:30 pm. There is no charge to attend but pre-registration is required and there is a maximum of 20 people per talk so sign up early to avoid disappointment. Call the museum at 250-334-0686 ext 2 to register. \n  \nButton Drive \nOne of Mitchell’s many projects as Culture Manager is working to create a “treasure box” of ceremonial regalia items to share with KFN members who are without. Buttons are always needed to craft new blankets\, and the public are invited to help by donating. Buttons must be white in colour but can be made from plastic or shell. Flat sew-through buttons are preferred. A drop box will be at the museum from October 22 to October 30 for those who wish to contribute.

SUMMARY:Lecture: North Island Heritage Sites
DESCRIPTION:Plan your next “staycation” with historian Jeanette Taylor\, who will give an illustrated talk about north Vancouver Island’s heritage sites\, Tuesday\, November 3 at 7pm at the Courtenay Museum. \nTaylor brings a wealth of experience to her subject\, from writing local history to guided boat tours and her former role as a curator with the Museum at Campbell River. \nShe’ll highlight accessible gems and provide a downloadable site list. Many can be reached by car and trail\, while others\, like Mitlenatch Island or Nootka Sound\, require boat tours. \nTaylor likes to bring these areas to life with stories of remarkable individuals. One such person is August Schnarr\, who raised three girls on his own in the isolated mountain vastness of Bute Inlet. The girls became famous for raising cougars as pets. \n“The north island is not an easy place to live\,” says Taylor\, “between the mountains\, wind\, extreme tides and weather. Settlers who wanted to farm chose the Comox Valley or points south. The north demanded adventurers\, prepared to face extremes.” \nAdmission to the evening is $5 per Historical Society member; $6 non-members (plus GST). Advance tickets are strongly recommended as the museum lecture series frequently sells out. FMI: 250-334-0686 ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Wild Bears of Canada
DESCRIPTION:In a presentation based on his book\, Wild Bears of Canada\, wildlife guide and photographer Edward Savage will share some of his observations about grizzlies\, black bears\, and polar bears. \nSavage will be speaking at 7:00 PM on Tuesday\, December 1\, in the Courtenay and District Museum. \nEdward Savage has spent fifteen years watching bears across some of the country’s most remote terrain— and for many of the bears in this book\, that relationship spans over a decade. That depth of observation is evident on every page of his book: how grizzly mothers raise and wean their young\, what dangers imperil black bears\, and how polar bears locate each other across the sea ice. \nSavage’s photographs and reflections explore the many traits of bears that we as humans value and connect with\, from the profound mother-cub bonds to the strength and calm they exude in daily life. \nCopies of Wild Bears of Canada (Harbour Publishing) will be available for purchase ($49.95 plus tax) and signing after the talk. \nEdward Savage has led nature-based expeditions across Canada and internationally—wading rivers\, kayaking remote coastlines\, crossing the sub-arctic tundra—and has lectured widely on bear behaviour and ecology. \nAdmission to the lecture is $5 per historical society member; $6 for non-members. Advance tickets are strongly recommended. Doors open 6:30 PM. \nFor more information\, or to purchase tickets over the phone\, call 250-334-0686 ext. 2.  The Courtenay and District Museum is located at 207 Fourth Street in downtown Courtenay.
