SUMMARY:Imaginarium
DESCRIPTION:The Pearl Ellis Gallery presents – Imaginarium: The Art of the Unseen. It invites you into worlds shaped by dreams\, memories\, imagination\, mythology\, and the subconscious. \nSome pieces began with a clear idea. Others appeared unexpectedly through dreams\, meditation\, intuition\, or simply letting go and seeing what emerged. \nArtist Glenn Gustafson reflects on how even our own memories can become part of the imagined world: “As we get older\, we often experience a longing to return to the places and people of our childhoods\, only to find that our memories are faded\, faulty\, fictional or all three.” \nThroughout the exhibition\, artists explore the curious space between what is real\, what is imagined\, and what we may not fully understand. \nJoin us for the Opening Reception\n Saturday\, September 19\, 1–3 pm\n Pearl Ellis Gallery\n 1729 Comox Ave.\, Comox \nThe exhibition runs September 15 to October 10. Admission is free. \nCome in\, have a look around\, and see what draws you in.

SUMMARY:The Moon Also Rises
DESCRIPTION:The invitation is to look up. \nIn The Moon Also Rises\, seven island artists turn their attention toward our nearest celestial neighbour. Each artist offers a different way of seeing\, experiencing and responding to the Moon. Across a multitude of media\, including painting\, printmaking\, photography\, sculpture\, video and poetry\, the exhibition shifts back and forth between the tangible and imaginal\, the known and mysterious. \nWhile the moon has provided us a consistent presence in the sky\, it has also offered a powerful vessel for humans to make meaning of. Consistently inconstant\, it marks time and generates tides. The moon illuminates dark nights\, shines during the day and has long been associated with dreams\, desire and psychological transformation. Simultaneously intimate and immense\, the moon acts as a repository for the symbolic\, whether playful or contemplative\, and has always captured the imagination of humanity. \nOne moon. Seven artists. Seven perspectives. \nWhat does the moon awaken in you?

SUMMARY:Comox Valley Songwriters Circle
DESCRIPTION:Each month singer/songwriters gather to share their tunes at Artful : The Gallery. The range of abilities\, experience and genres welcomes musicians who appreciate the challenge (and the deadline!) of creating a new song each month. \nThe circle provides a place to be inspired\, seek feedback and to be\nable to hear what other creatives are working on. Most musicians bring along their\nguitars or ukuleles\, although some sing a cappella or use the in-house piano for accompaniment. \nHost Ashley Sykes’s love of connecting with other artists provides motivation to write\nand perform in the supportive group. The circle does not provide instruction; it provides an opportunity to perform your song\, and to be impacted by others doing the same. \nAttendance is by donation ($10 or pwyc). The group welcomes newcomers\, and the\nonly criteria is that the songs performed are original.

SUMMARY:Lecture: North Island Heritage Sites
DESCRIPTION:Plan your next “staycation” with historian Jeanette Taylor\, who will give an illustrated talk about north Vancouver Island’s heritage sites\, Tuesday\, November 3 at 7pm at the Courtenay Museum. \nTaylor brings a wealth of experience to her subject\, from writing local history to guided boat tours and her former role as a curator with the Museum at Campbell River. \nShe’ll highlight accessible gems and provide a downloadable site list. Many can be reached by car and trail\, while others\, like Mitlenatch Island or Nootka Sound\, require boat tours. \nTaylor likes to bring these areas to life with stories of remarkable individuals. One such person is August Schnarr\, who raised three girls on his own in the isolated mountain vastness of Bute Inlet. The girls became famous for raising cougars as pets. \n“The north island is not an easy place to live\,” says Taylor\, “between the mountains\, wind\, extreme tides and weather. Settlers who wanted to farm chose the Comox Valley or points south. The north demanded adventurers\, prepared to face extremes.” \nAdmission to the evening is $5 per Historical Society member; $6 non-members (plus GST). Advance tickets are strongly recommended as the museum lecture series frequently sells out. FMI: 250-334-0686 ext. 2.
