SUMMARY:Intro To Quilting- A Simple Sampler
DESCRIPTION:Oct 9 – Nov 13 \nFeeling intimidated about quilting? It can feel scary\, but a calm and compassionate teacher with a plan will help you work through the step to succeed! Enter Lorraine! Please read the complete description before registration! \nThis multi-week class is a great primer\, encompassing  the basic skills you need for almost any future quilt. \nPrerequisite: Students should have some experience on a sewing machine (within the last year or so)\, some comfort with straight line sewing. \nYou’ll learn about fabrics\, colours\, print and how many different ways you can make something look great! \nYou’ll gain confidence with measuring and cutting with the rotary cutter and learn chain-piecing and pressing. \nYou’ll learn the tips and tricks to make 4-squares look great\, how to make log cabins and the essential- half square triangles! \nThe pattern we’ve created for this class is somewhat modular- if you want to play with the design\, you may. However\, if you know yourself to be indecisive or perfectionist\, we invite you to make it as designed to take that pressure off you\, and to spend your energy learning\, not thinking! \nNext\, you’ll construct your whole quilt top\, quilt and bind it. \nSome people (like Nicole) love piecing quilts but don’t enjoy the actual quilting part- so you’ll have the option to have it long-arm quilted by Lorraine (for a fee)\, and then you’ll bind it! \nThe thing about quilts- they are infinite. One design can be made so personally and so uniquely time and again! \nBatting and thread is included in the cost of the class\, but fabric is not. We know many people have their own fabric they want to use\, and using the collected stash is a great way to get started! \nYou can use as few as two fabrics for a very graphic look\, or 50 for a scrappy look.

SUMMARY:Bag Making With Lorraine
DESCRIPTION:Oct 8 – Oct 22 \nJoin Lorraine for this great bag-making class! \nYou will use the Traverse Bag by Noodlehead Patterns\, with a small modification to make it even more beginner-friendly. \nChoose from two sizes! \nThis class is a great way to keep practicing those straight lines\, sewing zippers\, and making accurate measurements and cuts. You’ll learn how to use bag patterns\, rotary cutters\, and hardware. \nFor your convenience\, we have included all the hardware\, straps\, zippers (with a few colours to choose from) and interfacing\, so all you need to buy is your fabric. Use a lovely canvas or even a linen! \nThe only prerequisite: Basic knowledge of the sewing machine (Foundations\, Get to Know your sewing machine class or Fundamentals are a great start.). If you are still beginner\, Lorraine can help set up your machine\, but there isn’t time to explain how to thread the machine\, in order to keep the class focused on bag making!

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Dinosaurs of BC at the Courtenay and District Museum
DESCRIPTION:Dinosaurs of BC\, a travelling exhibit produced by the Royal BC Museum\, is now on display at the Courtenay and District Museum. \nDig into prehistoric British Columbia and get up close and personal with “Buster”\, the Iron Lizard of the Sustut River\, and the other dinosaurs that once roamed the province’s highest peaks\, densest forests and most remote river basins. Through research done by the Royal BC Museum’s palaeontology team\, we’re learning just how many ancient creatures once called these lands home. \nFollow the footsteps of tyrannosaurs and ankylosaurs\, see beautifully preserved marine fossils and meet the BC-born and bred Buster\, our reigning resident ferrisaurus. \nDinosaurs of BC initially debuted at the Royal BC Museum in 2023 and was met with an overwhelmingly positive public response. \n“The Courtenay and District Museum team is thrilled to welcome the Dinosaurs of BC exhibit from the Royal BC Museum\, and to invite the public to discover ”Buster” and other dinosaurs that reflect the diversity of British Columbia’s ancient life. This\, along with the Courtenay and District Museum’s palaeontological holdings\, including the 80-million-year-old elasmosaur\, now British Columbia’s official fossil emblem\, will give visitors a rare and exciting experience in exploring BC’s vast fossil record” says Deborah Griffiths\, Executive Director at the Courtenay Museum.

SUMMARY:Pearl Ellis Gallery Presents: "Outside In"
DESCRIPTION:The Pearl Ellis Gallery is thrilled to present “Outside In\,” a captivating group show featuring the works of Maggie Ziegler\, Sharon Lalonde\, Shea Kotilla\, Jean Cockburn\, Lynn Farwell\, Larissa McLean\, and Elaine Smith. This exhibition runs from September 17 to October 12\, 2024. \nThe concept behind “Outside In” explores the sources of artistic inspiration. It goes beyond the visible world\, delving into the emotions and intangible feelings that drive creativity. This exhibition emphasizes the synthesis of external experiences with internal emotions to create art that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant. \nThe participating artists draw from their surroundings\, memories\, and personal experiences\, blending these with their inner emotions to create pieces that not only depict but also connect on a deeper level\, capturing what matters. \nWhile technical skill is essential\, the artists in “Outside In” aim to infuse their work with personal expression. This adds a unique touch that transforms their creations from mere representations into meaningful\, original art. \n“Outside In” challenges the notion that art must replicate reality. Instead\, the artists focus on capturing the essence of their inspirations—both seen and unseen—inviting viewers to engage with their work on an emotional level. \nMeet the artists and experience their work firsthand at the opening reception on Saturday\, September 21\, from 1-3 PM. The Pearl Ellis Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday\, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

SUMMARY:Slow Stich Series
DESCRIPTION:Sep 15 – Sep 29 \nIf you find yourself seeking a chance to slow down\, to deepen your relationship with your garments and with your self\, this 3-4 week series is an opportunity to do just that. \nJoin costume maker and artist Lori Kenney for a deep breath and many small stitches. \nThe practical side of this course is one of basic sewing skills many of us are missing\, taking care of our clothes to make our wardrobe last longer. \nThe artistic side of this course will help you add character and understand traditional textile art practices from around the world\, connecting you to the way humans have worked with fibres through history. \nThe meditative elements of this series will help you slow down\, connect to your breathing and the rhythm of stitching. \nTake inspiration from global textile traditions such as Kantha\ntechniques\, mending and darning\, and Japanese Boro\, which focuses on re-purposing old textiles\, re-piecing fabrics and building texture with stitch. Bring awareness to the calming repetition of hand stitch rhythms and discover the simple pleasure of making. \nThere will be time in this class for connection with each other\, and portions of silence and breath. \nThe goal is to leave this series with a set of skills and abilities you can carry with you to calm your heart in times of need. \nPlease bring some worn and loved garments\, as well as any scraps you would like to incorporate.  \nWe will include materials to use\, and have additional supplies available for purchase to bring home.

This six-week intensive course is geared for fascinated beginners. You will finish this course feeling more confidence in your ability to safely and beautifully use natural dyes at home\, with resources to continue building your skills! \nOn day one we will touch on best practices for a safe and efficient dye process\, and look at the different materials to dye including recycled fabrics\, wool\, cotton and silk. We will cover tannin dyes with either Sumac or Walnuts \nOn day two we learn about the charm of red dyes. Madder is one of the oldest reds\, and is a plant that can be grown locally. Coccineal is derived from an insect that feeds on cactus. These reds will bring us a variety of tones using modifiers and post mordants \nOn day three we cover the various yellows that are so abundant in the plant world. From Goldenrod to Tansy and Chamomile we look at the subtle shade variations these flavonoid dyes produce. \nOn day four is an introduction to Indigo which is always magical and exciting. We will touch on the basics of this vat dye\, exploring resist dyeing and giving you the grounding for your own experiments. \nOn day five we will build on our previous work by looking at overdyeing. This is a day of experimentation. \nOn day six we will touch on dyeing with mushrooms and lichen. We are blessed with several locally available dye mushrooms and this is your chance to learn to coax colours from them. \n-All materials will be provided\, but please bring gloves and a face mask (to protect against small airborne particles). SUMMARY:Paintings\, By the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned painter\, Ken Kirkby donated 50 of his paintings to Project Watershed prior to his death on June 20\, 2023. It was his wish that they be used for this event to raise funds for environmental restoration\, research and education on Vancouver Island. \nPaintings\, By The Numbers 2024\, will focus on celebrating Ken’s life and art on the beautiful enclosed patio at 40 KNOTS Winery. Luke Blu Guthrie will provide live music and complimentary locally crafted amuse-bouche from Cheffanie will be available. \nThe main activity of the event is the Art Draw which combines the thrill of getting a good deal with the warm fuzzy feeling of contributing to environmental stewardship. In Ken’s words “It’s not just a deal\, it’s a steal”. Ken’s art is world renowned and is valued between $1\,500 to $8\,000\, depending on factors such as size and framing. Through this event\, Art Draw Ticket holders will get to own an original Ken Kirkby for $600. Art Draw Ticket holders will also receive a complimentary taster of wine\, an amuse-bouche and may bring a guest. \nIf you just want to come and enjoy an afternoon of art and music\, Spectator Tickets are also available for $25.
