SUMMARY:Pearl Ellis Gallery Presents: "Outside In"
DESCRIPTION:The Pearl Ellis Gallery is thrilled to present “Outside In\,” a captivating group show featuring the works of Maggie Ziegler\, Sharon Lalonde\, Shea Kotilla\, Jean Cockburn\, Lynn Farwell\, Larissa McLean\, and Elaine Smith. This exhibition runs from September 17 to October 12\, 2024. \nThe concept behind “Outside In” explores the sources of artistic inspiration. It goes beyond the visible world\, delving into the emotions and intangible feelings that drive creativity. This exhibition emphasizes the synthesis of external experiences with internal emotions to create art that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant. \nThe participating artists draw from their surroundings\, memories\, and personal experiences\, blending these with their inner emotions to create pieces that not only depict but also connect on a deeper level\, capturing what matters. \nWhile technical skill is essential\, the artists in “Outside In” aim to infuse their work with personal expression. This adds a unique touch that transforms their creations from mere representations into meaningful\, original art. \n“Outside In” challenges the notion that art must replicate reality. Instead\, the artists focus on capturing the essence of their inspirations—both seen and unseen—inviting viewers to engage with their work on an emotional level. \nMeet the artists and experience their work firsthand at the opening reception on Saturday\, September 21\, from 1-3 PM. The Pearl Ellis Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday\, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

SUMMARY:Slow Stich Series
DESCRIPTION:Sep 15 – Sep 29 \nIf you find yourself seeking a chance to slow down\, to deepen your relationship with your garments and with your self\, this 3-4 week series is an opportunity to do just that. \nJoin costume maker and artist Lori Kenney for a deep breath and many small stitches. \nThe practical side of this course is one of basic sewing skills many of us are missing\, taking care of our clothes to make our wardrobe last longer. \nThe artistic side of this course will help you add character and understand traditional textile art practices from around the world\, connecting you to the way humans have worked with fibres through history. \nThe meditative elements of this series will help you slow down\, connect to your breathing and the rhythm of stitching. \nTake inspiration from global textile traditions such as Kantha\ntechniques\, mending and darning\, and Japanese Boro\, which focuses on re-purposing old textiles\, re-piecing fabrics and building texture with stitch. Bring awareness to the calming repetition of hand stitch rhythms and discover the simple pleasure of making. \nThere will be time in this class for connection with each other\, and portions of silence and breath. \nThe goal is to leave this series with a set of skills and abilities you can carry with you to calm your heart in times of need. \nPlease bring some worn and loved garments\, as well as any scraps you would like to incorporate.  \nWe will include materials to use\, and have additional supplies available for purchase to bring home.

SUMMARY:Natural Dye; Deep Dive!
DESCRIPTION:Sep 15 – Oct 20 \nIf you love natural dyes\, working with fibre and exploring colour\, you’ll love this six week course with Eloise Holland! \nTake control of your dye work and look more closely at the processes and chemistry behind the colours. This six-week intensive course is geared for fascinated beginners. You will finish this course feeling more confidence in your ability to safely and beautifully use natural dyes at home\, with resources to continue building your skills! \nOn day one we will touch on best practices for a safe and efficient dye process\, and look at the different materials to dye including recycled fabrics\, wool\, cotton and silk. We will cover tannin dyes with either Sumac or Walnuts \nOn day two we learn about the charm of red dyes. Madder is one of the oldest reds\, and is a plant that can be grown locally. Coccineal is derived from an insect that feeds on cactus. These reds will bring us a variety of tones using modifiers and post mordants \nOn day three we cover the various yellows that are so abundant in the plant world. From Goldenrod to Tansy and Chamomile we look at the subtle shade variations these flavonoid dyes produce. \nOn day four is an introduction to Indigo which is always magical and exciting. We will touch on the basics of this vat dye\, exploring resist dyeing and giving you the grounding for your own experiments. \nOn day five we will build on our previous work by looking at overdyeing. This is a day of experimentation. \nOn day six we will touch on dyeing with mushrooms and lichen. We are blessed with several locally available dye mushrooms and this is your chance to learn to coax colours from them. \n-All materials will be provided\, but please bring gloves and a face mask (to protect against small airborne particles). Feel free to bring a notebook\, and please dress for mess. If you have some small fabrics or textiles you would like to dye\, please feel free to bring them (doilies\, scraps\, small pieces only. SUMMARY:Paintings\, By the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned painter\, Ken Kirkby donated 50 of his paintings to Project Watershed prior to his death on June 20\, 2023. It was his wish that they be used for this event to raise funds for environmental restoration\, research and education on Vancouver Island. \nPaintings\, By The Numbers 2024\, will focus on celebrating Ken’s life and art on the beautiful enclosed patio at 40 KNOTS Winery. In addition to the art available in the draw\, we will have commemorative prints of his most famous painting “Isumataq” and books written about his life and journeys available to peruse or purchase. Luke Blu Guthrie will provide live music and complimentary locally crafted amuse-bouche from Cheffanie will be available. \nThe main activity of the event is the Art Draw which combines the thrill of getting a good deal with the warm fuzzy feeling of contributing to environmental stewardship. In Ken’s words “It’s not just a deal\, it’s a steal”. Ken’s art is world renowned and is valued between $1\,500 to $8\,000\, depending on factors such as size and framing. Through this event\, Art Draw Ticket holders will get to own an original Ken Kirkby for $600. Art Draw Ticket holders will also receive a complimentary taster of wine\, an amuse-bouche and may bring a guest. \nIf you just want to come and enjoy an afternoon of art and music\, Spectator Tickets are also available for $25. These tickets come with a glass of 40 Knots wine or a non-alcoholic beverage\, an amuse-bouche by Cheffanie\, and a Ken Kirkby commemorative print. \nThanks to our sponsors Odlum Brown\, 40 KNOTS Winery and Cheffanie\, all funds raised will go towards Project Watershed’s work in ecological restoration\, research\, and education.

SUMMARY:Salon des Refusés Exhibition (Ending Aug 24th)
DESCRIPTION:In 1863 in Paris\, France\, the jury for the annual Salon rejected two thirds of the painters who had presented work for adjudication into the prestigious Salon. The list of the refused included Gustave Courbet\, Edouard Manet\, Camille Pissarro\, Antoine Chintreuil\, James McNeill Whistler\, and Johan Jongkind. The rejected artists\, their patrons\, and supporters protested until they reached the ears of Emperor Napoleon III. \n\n\n\n“Numerous complaints have come to the Emperor on the subject of the works of art which were refused by the jury of the Exposition. His Majesty\, wishing to let the public judge the legitimacy of these complaints\, has decided that the works of art which were refused should be displayed…” \n\n\n\nThe critical attention legitimized the emerging avant-garde\, and the Impressionists exhibited their work outside of the Salon from 1874 onwards\, and the status of the Paris Salon began its decline. \n\n\n\nWe have some entertaining\, heartless\, and kind rejection letters to accompany this exhibition\, and many of these artists have had defining moments in their careers as a result of their rejections (including the owner of Artful : The Gallery) Join us to celebrate our rejections at the Salon des Refusés!

SUMMARY:Cheko and The Pozitive Rebellion - Elevate Summer Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:The Elevate Summer Concerts series is serving up reggae artist Cheko and the Pozitive Rebellion with a special opening set from the Youth Summer Songwriters Workshop!!!\n\nBorn in Mexico City\, into a large extended family of musicians\, Cheko was immediately immersed in the musical traditions of Mexico. Growing up in Guadalajara\, he began playing music at the age of 12 and went on to study classical guitar at the University of Guadalajara school of music. Leaving his formal studies\, Cheko began to explore other musical styles and sub-cultures and discovered the trombone and latin ska music in the barrios of his hometown. After playing with numerous bands and honing his skills on the trombone\, he united with fellow musicians to form his own reggae band\, Skanky Roots\, in 1999. After touring\, and a fast and furious rise to success\, the band disbanded and Cheko began to travel on his own. Working solo and in collaboration\, he played in Sayulita\, Western Canada\, and Europe. Today Cheko finds himself based on Vancouver Island\, a well-rounded and multi-talented musician whose projects span a variety of genres; reggae\, jazz\, funk\, folk\, African and classical.\n\nCheko embraces reggae music as the vessel in his journey to express a message of peace\, respect and love in this time\, and to voice awareness and understanding of our common human struggle in this Babylon system. From his Skanky Roots in Guadalajara\, Mexico to recent work in Canada with The Lion Rockers Cheko has grown into his own over the years colaborating internationally with an eclectic collection of ska\, funk and reggae bands\, such as los rastrillos\, La Yaga\, Monte Bong\, Pablo´s Magic Carpet\, Jah Coco the Confessions\, Ali And the budz\, as well as sharing the stage with international reggae greats like Israel vibration\, Steel Pulse\, Burning Spear\, The Skatilites\, Cultura Profetica\, Los Cafres and more.\nThis special Thursday event will open with performances from this summer’s Youth Songwriting Workshop!\n\nElevate Summer Concerts are FREE for our community and presented by Elevate the Arts and the Village of Cumberland. Special thanks for Biblio Taco\, Waverley Hotel and Riders Pizza for their generous support for the series!
