SUMMARY:Salon des Refusés Exhibition (Ending Aug 24th)
DESCRIPTION:In 1863 in Paris\, France\, the jury for the annual Salon rejected two thirds of the painters who had presented work for adjudication into the prestigious Salon. The list of the refused included Gustave Courbet\, Edouard Manet\, Camille Pissarro\, Antoine Chintreuil\, James McNeill Whistler\, and Johan Jongkind. The rejected artists\, their patrons\, and supporters protested until they reached the ears of Emperor Napoleon III. \n\n\n\n“Numerous complaints have come to the Emperor on the subject of the works of art which were refused by the jury of the Exposition. His Majesty\, wishing to let the public judge the legitimacy of these complaints\, has decided that the works of art which were refused should be displayed…” \n\n\n\nThe critical attention legitimized the emerging avant-garde\, and the Impressionists exhibited their work outside of the Salon from 1874 onwards\, and the status of the Paris Salon began its decline. \n\n\n\nWe have some entertaining\, heartless\, and kind rejection letters to accompany this exhibition\, and many of these artists have had defining moments in their careers as a result of their rejections (including the owner of Artful : The Gallery) Join us to celebrate our rejections at the Salon des Refusés!

SUMMARY:Cheko and The Pozitive Rebellion - Elevate Summer Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:The Elevate Summer Concerts series is serving up reggae artist Cheko and the Pozitive Rebellion with a special opening set from the Youth Summer Songwriters Workshop!!!\n\nBorn in Mexico City\, into a large extended family of musicians\, Cheko was immediately immersed in the musical traditions of Mexico. Growing up in Guadalajara\, he began playing music at the age of 12 and went on to study classical guitar at the University of Guadalajara school of music. Leaving his formal studies\, Cheko began to explore other musical styles and sub-cultures and discovered the trombone and latin ska music in the barrios of his hometown. After playing with numerous bands and honing his skills on the trombone\, he united with fellow musicians to form his own reggae band\, Skanky Roots\, in 1999. After touring\, and a fast and furious rise to success\, the band disbanded and Cheko began to travel on his own. Working solo and in collaboration\, he played in Sayulita\, Western Canada\, and Europe. Today Cheko finds himself based on Vancouver Island\, a well-rounded and multi-talented musician whose projects span a variety of genres; reggae\, jazz\, funk\, folk\, African and classical.\n\nCheko embraces reggae music as the vessel in his journey to express a message of peace\, respect and love in this time\, and to voice awareness and understanding of our common human struggle in this Babylon system. From his Skanky Roots in Guadalajara\, Mexico to recent work in Canada with The Lion Rockers Cheko has grown into his own over the years colaborating internationally with an eclectic collection of ska\, funk and reggae bands\, such as los rastrillos\, La Yaga\, Monte Bong\, Pablo´s Magic Carpet\, Jah Coco the Confessions\, Ali And the budz\, as well as sharing the stage with international reggae greats like Israel vibration\, Steel Pulse\, Burning Spear\, The Skatilites\, Cultura Profetica\, Los Cafres and more.\nThis special Thursday event will open with performances from this summer’s Youth Songwriting Workshop!\n\nElevate Summer Concerts are FREE for our community and presented by Elevate the Arts and the Village of Cumberland. Special thanks for Biblio Taco\, Waverley Hotel and Riders Pizza for their generous support for the series!

SUMMARY:Bu Von Blume - Elevate Summer Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Elevate Summer Concerts continue with an epic show on August 8th with local favourites Bu VonBlume and Trombonissimo!\n\nBu VonBlume is funk. Bu VonBlume is disco. Bu VonBlume is cumbia\, punk\, ska\, soul\, balkan. Whatever it takes to get the people moving and grooving\, really. Vancouver Island multi-instrumentalist Lou Kinglish (normally an accordion player) teamed up with some of the heaviest hitting funk\, brass\, jazz and punk virtuosos around to create Bu VonBlume; a band that mixes hilarious theatre antics with downright dangerous bass and horn lines to cook up a real dance fiasco.\nSpecial Opening set from Trobonissimo!\nTrombonissimo is a brass and loop pedal extravaganza! All trombone\, all the time is the motto for trombonist Daniel Cryderman’s solo project. After years of playing with large ensembles and touring groups\, Trombonissimo emerges as the solo live-electronic project that carries forward Cryderman’s musical journey. In Trombonissimo\, the trombone meets effect pedals\, loop pedals\, and sequenced beats on his drum machine. The eclectic shows offer a range of rock\, cumbia\, reggae\, and funky jazz covers mixed with original songs and compositions.\n\nElevate Summer Concerts are FREE for our community and presented by Elevate the Arts in partnership with the Village of Cumberland and supported by Biblio Taco\, Cumberland Brewing\, Riders Pizza and the Waverley Hotel!\n*For the safety and comfort of attendees please leave your furry friends at home.\n* If you bring chairs remember this simple guideline\, blankets in front\, then low riders\, then high lawn chairs.

SUMMARY:Sound Art Installation & Artist Talk By Jess Conn-Potegal
DESCRIPTION:Contemplation on Water and Steel \nJess Conn Potegal’s 2023 Contemplations on Water and Steel is a sound-based exploration of Jeffery Rubinoff’s sculptures. In collaboration with JRSP Curator Karun Koernig on bass\, keys and flute\, Conn-Potegal engages with Rubinoff’s work as aural entities in this project: deploying mallets and contact microphones\, he effectively plays the sculptures. The result is an assemblage of sculptural forms transposed into an auditory landscape\, complimented by aural fragments from the natural environment. Sound remains the subject of Contemplations\, but it is also the instrument which enables it. In eliciting sounds from the sculptural forms\, as well as collecting environmental noises from the grounds of the JRSP\, Conn-Potegal explores sound as an organic occurrence – both contrived and natural.

SUMMARY:Sound Art Installation by Daniela O’Fee
DESCRIPTION:Sonic Improvisations On The Sculptures Of Jeffrey RubinoffDaniela O’Fee created her Transmissions series as a direct response to the sculptures of Jeffery Rubinoff. Adopting the perspective of intergalactic researchers in this work\, O’Fee utilizes distance as a critical tool. Created remotely\, these transmissions are the researchers’ attempts to understand Rubinoff’s sculptural forms by activating each structure’s sonic presence – comprised of aural form\, rhythm\, texture\, and tonality. Working in direct response to specific sculptures at the JRSP\, O’Fee utilizes sound as an imaginative tool. Transmissions soundscapes grant each sculpture a distinct\, auditory dimension.
