SUMMARY:Lecture: North Island Heritage Sites
DESCRIPTION:Plan your next “staycation” with historian Jeanette Taylor\, who will give an illustrated talk about north Vancouver Island’s heritage sites\, Tuesday\, November 3 at 7pm at the Courtenay Museum. \nTaylor brings a wealth of experience to her subject\, from writing local history to guided boat tours and her former role as a curator with the Museum at Campbell River. \nShe’ll highlight accessible gems and provide a downloadable site list. Many can be reached by car and trail\, while others\, like Mitlenatch Island or Nootka Sound\, require boat tours. \nTaylor likes to bring these areas to life with stories of remarkable individuals. One such person is August Schnarr\, who raised three girls on his own in the isolated mountain vastness of Bute Inlet. The girls became famous for raising cougars as pets. \n“The north island is not an easy place to live\,” says Taylor\, “between the mountains\, wind\, extreme tides and weather. Settlers who wanted to farm chose the Comox Valley or points south. The north demanded adventurers\, prepared to face extremes.” \nAdmission to the evening is $5 per Historical Society member; $6 non-members (plus GST). Advance tickets are strongly recommended as the museum lecture series frequently sells out. FMI: 250-334-0686 ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Wild Bears of Canada
DESCRIPTION:In a presentation based on his book\, Wild Bears of Canada\, wildlife guide and photographer Edward Savage will share some of his observations about grizzlies\, black bears\, and polar bears. \nSavage will be speaking at 7:00 PM on Tuesday\, December 1\, in the Courtenay and District Museum. \nEdward Savage has spent fifteen years watching bears across some of the country’s most remote terrain— and for many of the bears in this book\, that relationship spans over a decade. That depth of observation is evident on every page of his book: how grizzly mothers raise and wean their young\, what dangers imperil black bears\, and how polar bears locate each other across the sea ice. \nSavage’s photographs and reflections explore the many traits of bears that we as humans value and connect with\, from the profound mother-cub bonds to the strength and calm they exude in daily life. \nCopies of Wild Bears of Canada (Harbour Publishing) will be available for purchase ($49.95 plus tax) and signing after the talk. \nEdward Savage has led nature-based expeditions across Canada and internationally—wading rivers\, kayaking remote coastlines\, crossing the sub-arctic tundra—and has lectured widely on bear behaviour and ecology. \nAdmission to the lecture is $5 per historical society member; $6 for non-members. Advance tickets are strongly recommended. Doors open 6:30 PM. \nFor more information\, or to purchase tickets over the phone\, call 250-334-0686 ext. 2.  The Courtenay and District Museum is located at 207 Fourth Street in downtown Courtenay.
