DESCRIPTION:The historic Filberg Park in Comox is gearing up to host the 40th annual Filberg Festival from Friday\, August 2nd to Sunday\, August 4th\, 2024. Tickets for the weekend and single-day experiences are available at www.filbergfestival.com. \n\n\n\nThis year\, Filberg Festival continues its tradition of showcasing the finest Canadian & international talent alongside a carefully curated selection of 140 artisans and makers spanning various mediums including fine art\, metalwork\, pottery\, woodwork\, jewelry\, glass\, textiles\, and specialty foods. The Filberg Lodge Heritage Lodge & Park will also have a booth set up to celebrate the history of the festival and the park. \n\n\n\nMusical highlights include Friday night’s headliners Joel Plaskett featuring Mo Kenney who will be making their first appearance at Filberg Festival alongside Australian singer/songwriter Kim Churchill\, who will be making his second appearance at the festival. On Saturday we have The Grapes of Wrath performing who are also celebrating an anniversary\, their platinum-selling album “Now And Again” turns 35 this year. Also performing Saturday is a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous\, and a living Canadian treasure Willie Thrasher. Closing out the festival on Sunday we have Comox Valley locals Blue Moon Marquee. Hot off the heels of winning a Juno for Blues Recording Of The Year\, and a nomination for Indigenous Artist Of The Year. From folk to blues\, indie to roots\, the festival promises a diverse musical experience for all attendees to accompany their artisan shopping experience. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the stellar music lineup\, Filberg Festival offers an array of food truck fare and al fresco dining at the Filberg Summer Kitchen. DESCRIPTION:This summer’s Make Art Series and drop-in Make Stations have been developed by CVAG’s summer student interns\, who have been inspired by the work presented in the exhibition: Diane Landry: Matière dans le Temps | Matter in Time from June 15 – September 24. Landry is known for her kinetic sculptural works and performances that utilize light\, shadow\, sound and movement. Much of her work incorporates the use of upcycled materials. \n\n\n\nActivities will be facilitated by the student interns. Drop-in sessions are self-guided using materials created by the students. Participants are welcome to ask students for assistance. \n\n\n\nCVAG STUDENT INTERNS 2024 – Naia Lisch | Rhea Whitehead | Griffin Halpin \n\n\n\nAbout the Series + Drop-ins: \n\n\n\n\nMaterials + making tools are provided.\n\n\n\nThere will be instructions that you can take home so you can continue creating!\n\n\n\nAll ages + abilities are welcome\, except where specified. SUMMARY:Sound Art Installation & Artist Talk By Jess Conn-Potegal
DESCRIPTION:Contemplation on Water and Steel \nJess Conn Potegal’s 2023 Contemplations on Water and Steel is a sound-based exploration of Jeffery Rubinoff’s sculptures. In collaboration with JRSP Curator Karun Koernig on bass\, keys and flute\, Conn-Potegal engages with Rubinoff’s work as aural entities in this project: deploying mallets and contact microphones\, he effectively plays the sculptures. The result is an assemblage of sculptural forms transposed into an auditory landscape\, complimented by aural fragments from the natural environment. Sound remains the subject of Contemplations\, but it is also the instrument which enables it. In eliciting sounds from the sculptural forms\, as well as collecting environmental noises from the grounds of the JRSP\, Conn-Potegal explores sound as an organic occurrence – both contrived and natural.

SUMMARY:Sound Art Installation by Daniela O’Fee
DESCRIPTION:Sonic Improvisations On The Sculptures Of Jeffrey RubinoffDaniela O’Fee created her Transmissions series as a direct response to the sculptures of Jeffery Rubinoff. Adopting the perspective of intergalactic researchers in this work\, O’Fee utilizes distance as a critical tool. Created remotely\, these transmissions are the researchers’ attempts to understand Rubinoff’s sculptural forms by activating each structure’s sonic presence – comprised of aural form\, rhythm\, texture\, and tonality. Working in direct response to specific sculptures at the JRSP\, O’Fee utilizes sound as an imaginative tool. Transmissions soundscapes grant each sculpture a distinct\, auditory dimension.

SUMMARY:Salon des Refusés Artist Reception at Artful : The Gallery
DESCRIPTION:In 1863 in Paris\, France\, the jury for the annual Salon rejected two thirds of the painters who had presented work for adjudication into the prestigious Salon. The list of the refused included Gustave Courbet\, Edouard Manet\, Camille Pissarro\, Antoine Chintreuil\, James McNeill Whistler\, and Johan Jongkind. The rejected artists\, their patrons\, and supporters protested until they reached the ears of Emperor Napoleon III. \n“Numerous complaints have come to the Emperor on the subject of the works of art which were refused by the jury of the Exposition. His Majesty\, wishing to let the public judge the legitimacy of these complaints\, has decided that the works of art which were refused should be displayed…” \nThe critical attention legitimized the emerging avant-garde\, and the Impressionists exhibited their work outside of the Salon from 1874 onwards\, and the status of the Paris Salon began its decline. ​ \nWe have some entertaining\, heartless\, and kind rejection letters to accompany this exhibition\, and many of these artists have had defining moments in their careers as a result of their rejections (including the owner of Artful : The Gallery) Join us to celebrate with our rejections at the Salon des Refusés!

DESCRIPTION:Mark Bérubé is one of Canada’s most captivating and unfaltering talents\, having devoted himself with the spirit of a craftsman to the art of song. With one foot rooted in the folk music tradition of story-telling\, the poetry of spoken-word\, and the other planted in a childhood love of South African music\, psychedelic folk pop and a smattering of jazz\, Mark Berube has a broad and eclectic base from which to build his albums\, all bound together by his warmly potent voice. \n\n\nMark has released 4 albums under his own name before forming the group KLIFFS with Kristina Koropecki in 2019. His albums have been nominated for a Western Canada Music Award\, a Canadian Folk Music Award\, and a GAMIQ (Québec) award in the past\, and he has been touring Canada and Europe since 2004\, playing some of the biggest festivals and stages\, such as the Montreal Jazz Festival\, Paléo (Switzerland)\, Printemps du Bourges Festival (France)\, L’Olympia (Paris\, France)\, Xjazz Festival (Berlin\, Germany)\, and the Vancouver Folk Festival\, to name a few. \n\n\nOriginally from Manitoba\, he spent his formative years as a musician in East Vancouver\, where he was a co-founder of The Fugitives\, and learned his craft bouncing back and forth from the jazz\, pop\, folk\, and spoken word scenes\, often sharing the stages with the likes of Dan Mangan\, Shane Koyczan\, Archie Pateman (The Breakmen) back in the day. His latest album “after the flattery” (KLIFFS) was released in early 2023 and was hailed by the German national newspaper SPIEGEL as “So flattering and beautifully done that it leaves you flabbergasted.” \nMark will be performing solo and Archie Pateman will be opening the evening. DESCRIPTION:This summer’s Make Art Series and drop-in Make Stations have been developed by CVAG’s summer student interns\, who have been inspired by the work presented in the exhibition: Diane Landry: Matière dans le Temps | Matter in Time from June 15 – September 24. Landry is known for her kinetic sculptural works and performances that utilize light\, shadow\, sound and movement. Much of her work incorporates the use of upcycled materials. \n\n\n\nActivities will be facilitated by the student interns. Drop-in sessions are self-guided using materials created by the students. Participants are welcome to ask students for assistance. \n\n\n\nCVAG STUDENT INTERNS 2024 – Naia Lisch | Rhea Whitehead | Griffin Halpin \n\n\n\nAbout the Series + Drop-ins: \n\n\n\n\nMaterials + making tools are provided.\n\n\n\nThere will be instructions that you can take home so you can continue creating!\n\n\n\nAll ages + abilities are welcome\, except where specified. DESCRIPTION:Printed Matter. The Comox Valley Printmakers Association (CVPA) is a diverse group of artists expressing themselves via the dynamic interaction of ink and paper (and occasionally wood and fiber). Rooted in the rich tradition of printmaking\, these artists are invested in the physicality and joy of creating the hand-pulled art print. Using traditional and contemporary processes and techniques the artists of the CVPA share their expression of visual language where process is an integral part of their artistic expression.

SUMMARY:SUMMER 2024 MAKE ART SERIES + DROP-IN MAKE STATIONS
DESCRIPTION:This summer’s Make Art Series and drop-in Make Stations have been developed by CVAG’s summer student interns\, who have been inspired by the work presented in the exhibition: Diane Landry: Matière dans le Temps | Matter in Time from June 15 – September 24. Landry is known for her kinetic sculptural works and performances that utilize light\, shadow\, sound and movement. Much of her work incorporates the use of upcycled materials. \n\n\n\nActivities will be facilitated by the student interns. Drop-in sessions are self-guided using materials created by the students. Participants are welcome to ask students for assistance. \n\n\n\nCVAG STUDENT INTERNS 2024 – Naia Lisch | Rhea Whitehead | Griffin Halpin \n\n\n\nAbout the Series + Drop-ins: \n\n\n\n\nMaterials + making tools are provided.\n\n\n\nThere will be instructions that you can take home so you can continue creating!\n\n\n\nAll ages + abilities are welcome\, except where specified. DESCRIPTION:Artful : The Poets features Cornelia Hoogland as our featured poet\, followed by an open mic (sign up at the door for your 5 minute spot). Diana Kolpak is our host for the evening. \nCornelia Hoogland is 2023 winner of the Colleen Thibaudeau Outstanding Achievement in Poetry Award. Trailer Park Elegy\, (Harbour\, 2017)\, was a finalist for the Raymond Souster award. Woods Wolf Girl (Wolsak and Wynn\, 2011) was a finalist for the ReLit Award for Poetry. Tourists Stroll a Victoria Waterway was a finalist for the 2017 CBC Poetry Awards and her long poem\, “Sea Level\,” a finalist for the CBC Nonfiction Awards\, was published as a chapbook (Baseline Press\, 2012). \nCosmic Bowling\, A Girl Walks into the Woods (a graphic novel with Diana Tamblyn) and  Tracks in the Snow (Baseline)\, are her latest books. She lives on Hornby Island with the visual artist Ted Goodden and Drummer. SUMMARY:Reading - Into - Writing
DESCRIPTION:READING-INTO-WRITING is a workshop by Cornelia Hoogland that will precede her feature poet reading (followed by an open mic) at the Artful : The Gallery\, Courtenay B.C. The workshop runs 5:00-6:30 pm on July 8\, 2024. The back-to-back workshop and reading are by separate donation to cover separate costs. Please arrive ON TIME\, say\, 10 minutes beforehand! \nCornelia Hoogland\, author of 8 books of poetry\, has taught writing during her university career\, in her annual\, online courses\, and in the community (for which she received the national 2023 Colleen Thibaudeau Award for Excellence in Poetry). \nIn READING-INTO-WRITING\, participants (beginners welcome) will hone their skills in reading a poem in a way that allows them to create a template to use in writing their own poems. The template can help avoid the formal or linguistic habits we writers fall into\, and offer alternatives\, thereby refreshing our writing practice and surprising us. \nIn preparation for the workshop\, find and bring a poem that you admire and want to emulate (This is voluntary!). Cornelia will bring copies of the poem we’ll use to build our template\, and time permitting\, try out. Bring writing materials and a sense of fun and experimentation. In the reading that follows\, Hoogland will expand concepts introduced into the workshop\, giving living examples of her READING-INTO-WRITING method. Join us for either or both!
