SUMMARY:Miniature Craft Workshop: Custom Fridge Magnets
DESCRIPTION:The Courtenay and District Museum will be hosting a miniature sculpting/painting workshop on Saturday\, May 25th from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm to celebrate the completion of the new exhibit\, Models & Miniatures.  Anyone 10 and up is welcome to drop in the museum’s Rotary Gallery and sculpt\, bake\, then paint their very own custom fridge magnets to take home. \nThis is a free drop-in event with some painting involved\, so arrive ready to get a little bit messy! Our volunteer enthusiast\, Josh\, will be on hand to guide the group and assist with any difficulties\, and materials will be provided to accommodate 1 magnet per person while supplies last. \nThis latest exhibit explores the themes of scale and how we gain new perspectives through different sizes. Check out the hands-on table\, take part in an I-Spy matching game\, and see what the museum’s collection has to offer for all things big and small. Head over to the Courtenay Museum website for more details. \nModels & Miniatures Exhibit \nhttps://www.courtenaymuseum.ca/programmes-exhibits/our-exhibits/current-exhibit/  \nMiniature Craft Workshop: Custom Fridge Magnets \nhttps://www.courtenaymuseum.ca/events/miniature-craft-workshop-custom-fridge-magnets/

SUMMARY:Strathcona Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky – From Dark to Light
DESCRIPTION:The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra’s (SSO) From Dark to Light! program features two of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic works\, Symphony No. 5 in E Minor\, and one of the most difficult violin pieces in history\, Violin Concerto in D Major\, with Canadian-born soloist\, Gregory Lewis. \nThe performances will be at the Filberg Centre in Courtenay (Friday\, May 24th) and the Tidemark Theatre in Campbell River (Saturday\, May 25th). \nA Canada Council for the Arts recipient\, Gregory won the right to play a 1768 Gagliano violin for three years and he will be the SSO’s guest soloist for the challenging violin piece. \nGregory grew up in Thunder Bay and left at the age of sixteen to pursue his musical education and a bachelor’s degree in Winnipeg before relocating to the U.S. to get a master’s degree at Yale University.  He is now pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree while simultaneously playing in Yale’s award-winning Quartet in Residence\, the Callisto Quartet. The Callisto Quartet maintains a busy international touring schedule\, appearing at notable venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, and the Ravinia Festival. \nGregory’s connection with SSO Music Director and solo cellist\, Helena Jung\, dates to 2017 when he first performed on Vancouver Island with Campbell River-born pianist\, Carter Johnson.  Carter introduced Gregory to Helena\, and the three musicians toured Vancouver Island in 2018 and 2019.  Helena contacted Gregory in early 2023 with the idea of performing Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto with the SSO and Gregory enthusiastically agreed to the request. \nThe concert’s title\, From Dark to Light! refers to the emotional trajectory of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Violin Concerto\, taking the listener on a journey through a range of emotions\, from darker\, more turbulent passages to moments of light\, hope\, and resolution. \nHelena Jung\, said\, “I want the audience to feel how Tchaikovsky explores struggle\, despair\, and eventually triumph in Symphony No. 5\, mirroring his inner turmoil.” \n“In these times of political uncertainty\, social unrest\, and environmental challenges\, I hope the theme of moving from darkness to light helps our listeners find inspiration and resilience\,” she said. \nClassical music has also served as the inspiration for modern pop music to ballads\, including Frank Sinatra’s Moon Love which was adapted from Tchaikovsky’s 2nd movement in Symphony No. 5. \nTickets for the SSO’s From Dark to Light! Courtenay performance can be purchased at https://strathcona-symphony-orchestra.tickit.ca/ or the Campbell River concert at https://tidemarktheatre.com/events/.  Tickets may be available at the door\, but we have been selling out. \nPlease visit www.strathconasymphony.ca for more information or the SSO’s Facebook page\, https://www.facebook.com/StrathconaSymphonyOrchestra. \n

SUMMARY:Comox Valley Songwriters Circle
DESCRIPTION:Ashley Sykes is a singer/songwriter who has enjoyed being part of the Comox Valley songwriter circles since they began in 2005.   She’s been happily hosting them since Fall of 2022.   The circles are a place for both new and experienced songwriters to come share new songs they are working on\, or to dust off some old ones that may need some practice.  We take turns going around the circle sharing one song at a time\,  and each artist can decide if they want others to jam or singalong to their tune. \nAshley is happy to collaborate with Kristina Campbell\, owner of the Artful Gallery\, to welcome songwriters to a cozy and inspiring atmosphere where we will be surrounded by visual art as we share our musical art.

SUMMARY:Just in Time Choirs Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join the Just in Time Choirs for their “Beautiful Noise” Spring Concert at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay at 7:00 pm on Saturday April 27th. \nEnjoy well-loved contemporary songs in a wide variety of styles that celebrate sound and singing\, with classic rock favourites like The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” to Queen’s epic anthem\, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” In keeping with Just in Time’s tradition of a socially conscious focus in their Spring terms\, more modern songs such as Alicia Keys and Brandi Carlile’s poignant ballad\,“A Beautiful Noise\,” and Matisyahu’s stunning “One Day” have been chosen for their relevant themes of people standing together and raising their voices for what they believe in. \nOther popular tunes like Fleetwood Mac’s romantic “Songbird\,” Serena Ryder’s “Stompa\,” and Coldplay’s epic “Viva La Vida” are just a few more of the songs from the eclectic mix that have been chosen by Just in Time’s founder and choral conductor\, Wendy Nixon Stothert.  “We are really looking forward to sharing this impactful and moving music with our family\, friends\, and fans\,” says Nixon Stothert. “We’ve had such a good time digging into some more complex rhythms and exploring different vocal tones with this repertoire.” \nNow in their 19th year\, the thriving Just in Time Choirs organization comprises three ensembles: Unplugged (everyone welcome)\, and the smaller auditioned groups\, the Jems and Vocal Minority. These renowned local contemporary choirs will be joined by talented musical collaborators: Sean Mooney on piano\, Britt Bowman on bass\, Beau Stocker on drums\, Arlo Fleenor on guitar and special guest\, Rachel Cooper on saxophone. The infectious joy that all three choirs project in their presentations is uplifting and entertaining and has the audience tapping their feet and singing along. \nTickets are $28.00 for adults\, $15.00 for children 12 & under (including fees).  There is also a live stream option for $28.00 per household\, and we are again offering a limited number of Community Supported Tickets at $15 for those under financial constraint. Tickets and full details available online from the Sid Williams Theatre or the Just in Time web site. Tickets may be purchased at the door\, subject to availability\, but patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early as performances regularly sell out. \nWe look forward to sharing the joy of singing with you and welcoming you to the show!

SUMMARY:Intro To Quilting- A Simple Sampler
DESCRIPTION:Apr 16 – May 21 \nFeeling intimidated about quilting? It can feel scary\, but a calm and compassionate teacher with a plan will help you work through the step to succeed! Enter Lorraine! Please read the complete description before registration! \nThis multi-week class is a great primer\, encompassing  the basic skills you need for almost any future quilt. \nMaterials: A full list is below\, but most materials are not included\, to allow for students to bring their own. Batting and Thread in included. \nYou’ll learn about fabrics\, colours\, print and how many different ways you can make something look great! \nYou’ll gain confidence with measuring and cutting with the rotary cutter and learn chain-piecing and pressing. \nYou’ll learn the tips and tricks to make 4-squares look great\, how to make log cabins and the essential- half square triangles! \nThe pattern we’ve created for this class is somewhat modular- if you want to play with the design\, you may. However\, if you know yourself to be indecisive or perfectionist\, we invite you to make it as designed to take that pressure off you\, and to spend your energy learning\, not thinking! \nNext\, you’ll construct your whole quilt top\, quilt and bind it. \nSome people (like Nicole) love piecing quilts but don’t enjoy the actual quilting part- so you’ll have the option to have it long-arm quilted by Lorraine (for a fee)\, and then you’ll bind it! \nThe thing about quilts- they are infinite. One design can be made so personally and so uniquely time and again! \nBatting and thread is included in the cost of the class\, but fabric is not. We know many people have their own fabric they want to use\, and using the collected stash is a great way to get started! \nYou can use as few as two fabrics for a very graphic look\, or 50 for a scrappy look.

SUMMARY:YQQ + CVArts: Polarities and Junctions Closing
DESCRIPTION:YQQ + CVA Arts and Culture Program is an adjudicated exhibition that takes place in the winter and spring at the Comox Airport. The call for submissions is announced in the Fall and the show is up through early Spring. This program is a partnership between Comox Valley Arts and The Comox Airport (YQQ). \n\n\n\nAbout Polarities & Junctions: Polarity in physics is defined as two distinct and opposite poles that can either attract or repel each other. This term is also used to refer to the state of having two opposite or contradictory tendencies\, opinions\, or perspectives. Polarity as well as convergence can be found in nature\, online\, within political\, social\, economic and environmental contexts\, and among people’s perspectives. We invite you to consider the polarities you observe and navigate as an artist and the places of convergence and junction where differences can be conciliated in nature\, in communities and in global conversations. The show includes work by local and regional artists reflecting on this theme. \n\n\n\nThe show will be up and open to the public during airport hours until April 15th\, 2024.
