“Awakening” was inspired by a photograph I took of a favourite local view – Comox marina and the Beaufort mountains. I remember well the day I took this photo. It was just as things were starting to open up after months of strict Covid-19 restrictions. It was a beautiful day, after a succession of grey and rainy days, and I was sooo happy to be outside and feel the sun on my face. I have always loved this view. It never gets old. However, it seemed particularly beautiful on this day – as if the world was waking up again.

About the artist
Jo Payne is a Comox artist, passionate about colour, texture, and light. Graduating from Birmingham University, England, with a BA in Fashion & Textile Design, she worked in the fashion industry. After moving to Canada, Jo’s career took a different direction; she didn’t pick up a paintbrush for many years. In 2017, a Facebook Drawing Challenge reignited Jo’s love for painting. Jo prefers to work intuitively, creating atmospheric landscapes, seascapes, florals, and still life studies.
