SUMMARY:Spring Fling and Easter Magic 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Courtenay Museum invites you to their annual “Spring Fling and Easter Magic” event on Saturday\, March 21st\, from 11 am to 2 pm. Admission is by donation. \nThis will be a fun-filled\, action-packed three-hour event. \nThe ever-popular petting zoo provided by Barnyard Party Animals gives folks a chance to meet ducks\, geese\, bunnies\, chicks\, guinea pigs\, and hedgehogs. \nWe have invited a special guest this year\, “Magician Donald Dunphy\,” who will be performing amazing magic shows. Audience participation is a must. There will be two magic shows\, one at 11:45 and the other at 12:45. Each show will be different. \nYou will have the opportunity to visit with volunteers and a rescue bird from MARS Wildlife Rescue Centre\, where you can learn about their amazing wildlife rescues. \nA couple of games are planned for the Fling\, including a scavenger hunt and guess how many treats contest. People can also enter to win door prizes. Don’t forget to bring your craft skills to make a cute Easter craft to take home with you. \nThe Elasmosaur mascot will be making an appearance for photo opportunities and handing out delicious chocolate treats.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Fishes of the Strait of Georgia
DESCRIPTION:In a presentation based on their book\, Fishes of the Strait of Georgia\, authors and marine scientists Dick Beamish and Jeff Marliave will share their observations about some of the 243 species that frequent the strait. \nThey will be speaking at 7:00 PM on Tuesday\, March 17 in the Courtenay and District Museum. \nBoth authors have spent their professional lives studying the bountiful natural aquarium that is the Strait of Georgia. Marliave has a PhD in Zoology from UBC and was VP of Marine Science at Vancouver Aquarium. Beamish also has a PhD in Zoology; he has received the Order of Canada\, the Order of British Columbia and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He was also a member of the International Panel on Climate Change that received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. \nCopies of Fishes of the Strait of Georgia (Harbour Publishing) will be available for purchase ($80.00 plus tax) and signing after the talk. \nAdmission to the lecture is $5 per historical society member; $6 for non-members. SUMMARY:Lecture: Exploring Spain’s Legacy in the Salish Sea
DESCRIPTION:Santa Saturnina in Boundary Pass by Gordon Miller. \n  \nThe threat of “foreign” invasion into “their” seas in the wake of the tumultuous fur trade prompted Spain to explore in Northwest Pacific waters\, at the farthest reaches of their American empire\, from 1774 until 1796.  \nFollowing the Spaniards departure from the scene their explorations have gone largely unsung. Few people now know the stories behind the many Spanish place names still found on our coastal features. \nThis evening presentation will provide a short discussion illustrated by the work of three well known maritime artists and an exquisite new model of the Spanish schooner\, Santa Saturnina produced by Comox master model builder Bruce Ellis. \nSpeaker Kim Davies has a passion for history and since retiring he has been able to pursue Pacific Northwest coastal history full time and meet with historians and artists on various maritime history projects. \nAdmission to the lecture is $5 per historical society member; $6 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:The Courtenay and District Museum is pleased to present the travelling exhibition Broken Promises from the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre. \nGrounded in research from Landscapes of Injustice – a 7 year multi-disciplinary\, multi-institutional\, community engaged project\, this exhibit explores the dispossession of Japanese Canadians in the 1940s. It illuminates the loss of home and the struggle for justice of one racially marginalized community. The story unfolds by following seven narrators that include Eikichi Kagetsu of Fanny Bay and Hiroshi Okuda from Cumberland. Learn about life for Japanese Canadians in Canada before war\, the administration of their lives during and after war ends\, and how legacies of dispossession continue to this day. \nThank you to the Landscapes of Injustice Partner Institutions and the Government of Canada. \nSchool classes are welcome to visit this exhibit. SUMMARY:Live Lecture: Raincoast Chronicles: Fifth Five
DESCRIPTION:Join writer\, editor and publisher Howard White for an in-person talk based on the recently released “Raincoast Chronicles: Fifth Five” 7pm\, Tuesday\, November 5th at the Courtenay and District Museum. \nBrimming with stories and images\, this fascinating collection celebrates Harbour Publishing’s fifty-year commitment to recording the unique ways of life that have sprung from the West Coast. “Raincoast Chronicles: Fifth Five” includes stories of disasters at sea\, scarcely believable bush plane feats\, eerie events at coastal ghost towns and reminiscences of the Schnarr sisters who kept cougars as pets\, along with pieces by some of BC’s most iconic writers. \nHoward White was raised in a series of camps and settlements on the BC coast and never got over it. He started Raincoast Chronicles and Harbour Publishing in the early 1970s and his own books include Spilsbury’s Coast and Writing in the Rain. He has been awarded the Order of BC\, the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and a Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University of Victoria. In 2007\, White was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. \nCopies of “Raincoast Chronicles: Fifth Five” will be available for purchase ($60 plus tax\, Harbour Publishing) and signing after the talk. \nAdmission to the evening is $5 per Historical Society member; $6 non-members. DESCRIPTION:Dinosaurs of BC\, a travelling exhibit produced by the Royal BC Museum\, is now on display at the Courtenay and District Museum. \nDig into prehistoric British Columbia and get up close and personal with “Buster”\, the Iron Lizard of the Sustut River\, and the other dinosaurs that once roamed the province’s highest peaks\, densest forests and most remote river basins. Through research done by the Royal BC Museum’s palaeontology team\, we’re learning just how many ancient creatures once called these lands home. \nFollow the footsteps of tyrannosaurs and ankylosaurs\, see beautifully preserved marine fossils and meet the BC-born and bred Buster\, our reigning resident ferrisaurus. \nDinosaurs of BC initially debuted at the Royal BC Museum in 2023 and was met with an overwhelmingly positive public response. \n“The Courtenay and District Museum team is thrilled to welcome the Dinosaurs of BC exhibit from the Royal BC Museum\, and to invite the public to discover ”Buster” and other dinosaurs that reflect the diversity of British Columbia’s ancient life. DESCRIPTION:The Courtenay and District Museum will be hosting a miniature sculpting/painting workshop on Saturday\, May 25th from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm to celebrate the completion of the new exhibit\, Models & Miniatures.  Anyone 10 and up is welcome to drop in the museum’s Rotary Gallery and sculpt\, bake\, then paint their very own custom fridge magnets to take home. \nThis is a free drop-in event with some painting involved\, so arrive ready to get a little bit messy! Our volunteer enthusiast\, Josh\, will be on hand to guide the group and assist with any difficulties\, and materials will be provided to accommodate 1 magnet per person while supplies last. \nThis latest exhibit explores the themes of scale and how we gain new perspectives through different sizes.
